That is a result of being a mom of twins. Once upon a time, I was a lady of leisure. I had a ton of time - I can't tell you what I did with all that extra time. How things change...

In the last couple of weeks, I have found some time to get creative. Some friends of ours have welcomed their first baby. I remember in the weeks after the girls were born, the mountain of gifts that arrived at our door seemed endless. And, I also remember the seemingly insurmountable task of writing all those deserved thank you notes. Half that battle was buying the thank you's - yep, that's right. When you are three weeks out from having a baby (or babies) and you are running on 3-4 hours sleep, BUYING cards is not out of the question. My mom made some thank you's for me and I did make a trip to Target to buy some. Anyway, the point of the story was that I made a group of thank you's for our friend - postage stamps included. I feel like I've made enough greetings to create a house of cards! Hopefully this will help her with the task.

The cardstock is from Paper Source and the papers are a mixed bag of the 6x6 pads I had in my collection:

We've been in our current house 6 years, and it was about time to add a little pizazz to our master bath.

Previously, it was painted with a builder grade contractor paint - blah and boring. I decided that I wanted to do a Harlequin faux finish. In a past life of mine (i.e. before the twins), I painted for a living. And, when I was doing painting, this finish was kind of a trade secret - at least the "how-to" was. So, I pretty sure I'm giving up the secret. If I was a magician, they'd probably throw me out of the club, or revoke my rabbit and hat. Something like that anyway.

Here goes - Interested in doing a wall finish like this?

Ok - here is the step-by-step. It is very detailed, but much easier than it sounds. If you have any questions, please let me know. I'd be happy to answer them:

MATERIALS:

- Eggshell or Satin basecoat (and all the materials to paint the room.)

- Painters tape

- Glaze of choice - I used a light brown.

- Tool for applying glaze

- Small paint brush for applying finish around trim and doors

- 2 rolls of clear contact paper

- Ruler

- Scissors

- Level

-<strike>Patience </strike> (Just kidding! This is pretty easy!)

#1 - BASECOAT I applied the basecoat to my walls. The paint finish should be either satin or eggshell. This is so when I applied my glaze, it will slide across the surface and not stick where I put it (making it look "splotchy" - 1990's spongeing, anyone?) I used a Benjamin Moore neutral.

#2 - 1ST COAT OF GLAZE After my basecoat dried, I mixed a glaze and applied it to the wall. You can make a glaze using a number of products. I prefer either Aqua Cream or Aqua Glaze and colorant, but you can also use a paint and a product called Floetrol. It basically will create a glaze from any color paint, but use the paint SPARINGLY...you are trying to create a "see-through" layer, not an opaque layer. I think the ratio of paint to Floetrol is on the bottle.

You need to make enough glaze to cover the area you are working on TWICE. If you don't make enough glaze the first time, you will be forced to try and match the first glaze you made. I make more than enough and if I have extra, it's always better than trying to match. Plus, if you ever need to fix a wall, then you have the product that you need. I store the extra in a airtight container.

Apply the glaze to the tool of choice. I like the Woolie. You can also use a rag. I've found the Woolie is the fastest way to get your glaze spread around.

Using a small brush, I spread the glaze on the surface of the woolie so that it is covered.

I used the small brush to get close to the trim. I applied the glaze to the entire wall and let dry for at least 24 hours. This is important because if you try the next step too soon, you will wreck what you've already done.

#3 - MAKING DIAMONDS While the glaze is drying, I moved onto the next step - creating diamonds! Here's where the trade secret comes into play. There is no taping involved. I know, hard to believe. But, I speak the truth! I use clear contact paper. It's great because it's sticky on the back so that you can easily reposition it without a ton of hassle.

Why am I using contact paper? When you apply the contact paper diamond to your wall that has already been glazed, it creates a barrier. When you apply the second coat of glaze over the wall, the contact paper is "protecting" the wall just in that spot from getting the second coat of glaze. So, when you remove the contact paper, the portion of the wall that was protected appears lighter than the part of the wall that got two coats of glaze applied to it. Does that make sense?

Deciding your diamond size:

CAUTION - this step requires measuring and math - I'm horrible at both these things. So, if I can do it, so can you!

In order to determine what size I wanted my diamonds, I measured the height of the wall I was going to apply the finish to - This is important because if you're diamonds are too small, your wall will look super busy and if they are too large, you won't be able to see the effect of the pattern. Make sense? Ok.

My ceilings are 12 feet high in the tallest point that I would be working. I decided my diamonds would be 21 inches long and 12 inches wide (about 3/4 of the height). If you are intimidated by this measuring and figuring, you can also create this pattern using squares that are turned tip to tip in the pattern. But, I like the diamonds better.

The other great thing about the contact paper is that there are measurements on it. See?

So I measured every 21 inches vertically (because that is the HEIGHT of my diamond) and drew a horizontal line. You can see this line in the picture above. And you can faintly see this same horizontal line at the bottom of the diamond.

Then using my ruler, I measured 11 inches from the top line - which is the halfway point. This is the dot that I circled in middle. I had 10 inches above and 10 inches below that spot.

Then, I stuck it on the wall. You can eyeball this pretty well using the points of the diamond to make sure it's level, but for the first few, I like to use a level just to get the pattern started. Believe me, after all the steps you've taken, you don't want to get a pattern going all cattywampus. A complete do-over would be super frustrating, so it's easier to take the extra time now and make sure everything is level to begin.

And here are all 8 diamonds making my pattern on the wall.

As the light hits them from a different angle, they are a little easier to see. You might also notice that they are not completely perfect laying flat against the wall. There are a few wrinkles here and there. To me, this is the beauty of a faux finish. It is hand-applied. It is not wallpaper.
And, there are parts where my diamond points don't line up exactly like they should. I attribute this to cutting out the diamonds by hand. Again, not a mass-produced wallcovering, but something you CREATED!

I've done this step before - I applied the glaze to my tool of choice.
And, it also makes it easy to wrap the pattern around corners, if you need to.
But, since I only had 8 diamonds, I had to work in sections. Once I would get my glaze applied to an area, then I would peel the diamond off the wall in that spot and move it to the next part that needed to be done. I continued in this fashion - glazing, moving, glazing, moving across the wall until my wall was completed.
This card was created for my aunt who recently celebrated her 65th birthday.

Speaking of age, I had a dr.'s appointment yesterday and there were a couple of questions that I had about some issues...My doctor asked, "well, how old are you?" And I had to think about it! And then for a second, when my brain arrived at the right answer and I uttered the number aloud, I thought to myself, "Really? That can't be right." But, I guess it is. And I have to remind myself again, age is just a number. Seems like the phrase is easier to swallow when you're telling it to someone else.

ps. - can anyone tell me why a pacifier can stay in a baby's mouth for an extended amount of time (20, 30, 40 minutes!) while they are being held, but the minute they hit the crib, they can't seem to hold onto it? It's a mystery to me.

Hope you have something special planned. This year, our day will be a little less than last year's. Hard to believe that almost 1 year ago, after 1 failed IVF round, we were just weeks away from finding out that our dreams of having a family were going to come true! And, a little over a month after that, we would find out that we were going to be doubly blessed with two beautiful babies!

Yep, our romantic dinner may include a trip to Red Robin, where screaming children aren't frowned upon. Or maybe, a fabulous Pioneer Woman bacon wrapped filet. I vote for the second...cooking, even with clean-up, always trumps a anxious trip to the outside.

As promised, here is the 2nd Valentine's Day greeting that I made.

Hard to believe that on this romantic holiday, 12 years ago, a 26-ish young man got down on his knee in a local pizza parlor and asked a 23-ish something girl to marry him. That young man of course, was my husband. And, that girl was me! Nearly 11 years of marriage later, we are still hitched! So, you see, it is a very memorable and sentimental holiday for me.

Sneaking away from the girls for a little creative time, I was able to make some valentines to send. This card was inspired by Betsy Veldman's chalkboard technique. The way she does this is totally awesome, and since the chalkboard thing is so "in" right now, I decided to use it on this card. (If you have any questions about how to do this, her tutorial is wonderful - just follow the link!)

First I cut some hearts out of red and craft cardstock. Hero Arts has some great new stamping sets that include a cutting die - so you can cut out the shape and then stamp on it. After I cut out the hearts, I used the cardstock piece that was left as a stencil to make my heart pattern as a background on my card. I love using a foam makeup sponge to blend different shades of red together. The variegated hearts look so pretty.

After I made the background, I stamped the black piece of cardstock with frost white ink and then embossed it with white Zing embossing powder. Then, I stamped the same image again moving my stamp to the right ever so slightly to give it a "shadow" effect. Then, I used a dry paper towel and rubbed the cardstock lightly to create a dusty, chalky kind of look.

Then I used my white Signo pen (the best!) to embellish the stamp and draw so lines around my sentiment.

For the inside, I used a Movers & Shakers Zipper die from PaperTrey Ink. You can purchase it here. I love "interactive cards." When someone receives this, they can "pull here" on the little zipper tab to reveal a special message. PaperTrey Ink has a variety of stamps that can be used to stamp under the zipper part - but I decided to write my own message.
I wrote - "Happy Valentine's Day!"...I know, very original.
Next, I took one of the hearts that I cut out with the Hero Arts die and I rolled it through my Cuttlebug using the swiss dots embossing folder. That's what makes the raised dots. Then, for added detail, I lightly brushed over the dots with some red ink. Then, I adhered it to the red cardstock on the inside of the card.

A circle punch can be a very hand tool - especially when you are trying to make a fast card. The small circles were cut out using a punch, the larger circle was cut using a nestability. I ran the small circles through my baby x to adhere them and used foam squares to really make my scalloped circle pop. Then, I just ran a little ink around the edge of the card to dress up the plain white cardstock. The paper is by Bo Bunny.

The cardstock backing is an A2 Chartreuse card by Paper Source. I cut the place for the sentiment from cardstock using a nestability and then inking around the edge. The pattern paper is by Cosmo Cricket and then I embellished the design with turquoise stickles. The edge of the green paper was cut using a Martha Stewart border punch.

Nestabilities are such a great tool when you are looking to jazz up a place to stamp your sentiment. After I cut the shape, I stamped it and then stickled around the edge. The paper is by Basic Grey. The scalloped edge at the bottom was cut using a Martha Stewart punch.

Sometimes, simple is best. And, when you are creating 30 cards, the simple and quick creations are welcomed. The paper is by Cosmo Cricket (and, by the way, I buy 6x6 pads almost exclusively because you get most of the papers from the collection and the prints are smaller which is PERFECT for cardmaking!)

The circles were made with a punch and then I ran them through the baby x and adhered them to the card. Then, I embellished them with stickles.

I just love their designs and how you can make so many different creations from one stamp set. They are also very reasonably priced.

The girls will be 10 weeks old tomorrow and I'm finally feeling like life is getting a little more manageable. Last night, they slept from 7pm to 3am. And then from 3:30am to 7am. It was awesome. I was anticipating being sleep deprived, but had no idea how challenging it would be. Don't get me wrong, it was a welcome challenge, but a battle all the same.

So, time to get back to blogging. It's amazing to me that I'm still getting about 50 visits a week - even in my non-posting status. Thanks to you who have kept checking in to see what was going on - although I hadn't been posting all that much. I can tell you what has been going on...a lot of eating, sleeping and pooping, and I'm sure you don't really need to see photos of any of that - especially the last thing.

But, I did manage to sneak some creative time in and make some Christmas gifts. My MIL has a personal training business that she runs out of her home. Because she has so many clients, there is always a need for cards. Someone is always having a birthday, anniversary, needs congratulating for something...you get the idea. I made her a stack of about 30 cards. Here is the first of many...

What a six weeks it's been. The girls have arrived and are healthy and happy. They both tipped the scales at about 6 pounds. Hard to believe I was carrying almost 12 pounds of baby. Bibs are definitely at a premium around our house and surprisingly, I have a new found love for Wheel Of Fortune! It's practically the only thing on tv without questionable language or violence. I know the girls are not absorbing it yet, but I guess it's never too early to start creating good habits.
I have managed to do some holiday decorating.
Here is this year's tree and some outside decor.
The tree skirt hasn't been located yet. There are still some things that aren't perfect and I've learned that, as a new parent, I just have to be okay with that.
Hope you are enjoying your holiday season. We are counting every blessing this year and taking in every minute with our new little additions.
